Reflux esophagitis is one of the complications that can come from having chronic heartburn and acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Esophagitis is inflammation that damages the lining of the esophagus and often causes painful or difficult swallowing and chest pain. The type of esophagitis caused by heartburn and acid reflux/GERD is known as reflux esophagitis. Symptoms and risk factors of reflux esophagitis are similar to those of acid reflux disease/GERD.
If left untreated, reflux esophagitis may change the structure and function of the esophagus and lead to more serious complications such as Barrett’s esophagus, strictures and esophageal cancer.
