Lactose breath testing is a test which measures the amount of hydrogen released in breath as a result of the indigestion of lactose. Higher the hydrogen values, poorer the digestion of lactose.
Why is a Lactose Intolerance Breath Test Done?
Lactose intolerance breath testing is performed to diagnose an inability to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk. This causes diarrhea, flatulence and bloating after consuming milk or dairy products.
How does One Prepare for a Lactose Intolerance Breath Test?
To achieve accurate results, you must have an empty stomach before the procedure. You should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the test. You should also avoid eating slowly digesting foods like beans, bran or other high fiber cereals the day before testing. You should not smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least 30 minutes before or at any time during the test. You will be asked to drink 12oz. of cow’s milk 3 hours before your test.

How is a Lactose Intolerance Breath Test Performed?
After meeting the preconditions for testing, patients will be asked to breathe into a small machine which will provide results for analysis.
What Happens After a Lactose Intolerance Breath Test is Done?
This procedure takes about 5 minutes. Patients will be able to return to a normal diet and routine after the procedure.
