Understanding the importance of colon health

As with most parts of the body, we tend to give our colon very little attention — until there is a problem. One problem that may arise is the development of polyps (abnormal tissue growths) in the colon, for which medical attention is necessary.

At the office of The Gastroenterology Group of Northern New Jersey, our team of skilled professionals are experts in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of both benign and malignant diseases of the colon. We perform routine screening examinations and surgically treat a host of conditions in order to help restore better function to the gastrointestinal system. 

Many polyps of the colon develop as a benign (noncancerous) growth before becoming malignant (cancerous). A colonoscopy is first done to detect the presence of any polyps in the colon. If detected, a polypectomy is performed and the tissue is removed. 

Polyps aren’t often associated with any symptoms at all. However, larger polyps may cause rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and bowel irregularities. A polypectomy helps relieve these symptoms and is usually carried out at the same time as a colonoscopy (a procedure routinely offered for people who are over 50 years old to check for any growths that could be indicative of cancer.). Once the polyp has been removed, it is sent to a pathology lab to test if the polyp is cancerous. The course of any further treatment will be determined by whether your polyps are benign, precancerous, or cancerous.
